Well is fed from a spring which feeds at ground level into the back of the natural structure which has a stone surround, and shallow basin. It is set in the roadside hedge bank 150m from the gate to the lane which leads behind some old cottages to the parish church. Shallow well basin was filled with mud; water supply to the well may have been affected by modern water collecting tanks which have been sunk in the fields behind the site. Hedge in which this well is sited was dated to be at least 500 years old which suggest that this is not the site of the original well which may have been located closer to the church and possibly was the well which was filled in a few years ago and located in the bank of Bate Farmyard just below the church. St Curig was a Welsh saint who became a Bishop in Brittany; after his death in 550AD, his silver crosier was returned to Wales where it was believed to have healing powers. Well is included in Devon Sites and Monuments Register as a Sacred Well. Parish church has been dedicated to St Andrew since 1262.
