A brick well house located in a small hollow of rough land close to the Tarka Trail. Water all around the site including a trickle from the well itself which has been used to recent times for baptismal purposes in the town church. Church is dedicated to John the Baptist but prior to the Reformation may have had a double dedication to Mary and John ( and hence a link to Hatherleigh Well 2 - St Mary's well ). Sensitive and minimal restoration work has recently been done on the structure of St John's well. Listed in the Devon Sites and Monuments Register.
