There is a tradition of a holy well here and in 1830 the curate in charge of the church notes that "in the copse behind the church is the Holy Well now re-erected which the water was formerly taken for the font". The parish church of St Peter is believed to be on a site once dedicated to St Petroc ( although this may have been lost when the building was dedicated in 1261) and a well might be expected nearby. However local enquiries failed to produce any knowledge of a well; a search of the copse did show a jumble of old walls and drainage channels and a complex of springs and below ground water tanks at the head of the copse and serving nearby farm buildings. This site should not be confused with the Grade 2 listed St Petroc's Well also at Lewtrenchard and which is described in the next site Record
