Located in a corner of the vicarage garden at Morwenstow, this fine well house is in good repair; the water is said to be especially pure and was once piped into the vicarage as a domestic supply. The church nearby is dedicated to St Morwenna who has been the patron saint here since at least 1201 but the name of St John was added as a dedication in about 1285 when the church was gifted to the hospital of St John the Baptist in Bridgewater. The name "St John of the Wilderness " is used in an endowment of 1296 to describe this well.
