The site of this well is in a steep gully lying below the main A39 road and close to the old church of St Petroc. It was largely destroyed by major works by the North Devon Water Board in 1952 when works were carried out to modernise the Victorian arrangements to supply water from here to the village. Further work was done in 1995 when the spring was supplying between 400 and 1000 cubic metres of water each week for local use. In 1996 water for the village was supplied from the public mains and the use of the spring was discontinued. The large concrete collecting tanks of the 1952 and 1995 works remain Despite the lack of evidence for the actual ancient water source, the site set in a wooded coombe and close to one of the most interesting churches in Devon, still has the power to evoke a feeling of calm. Listed in the Devon Sites and Monuments Register.
