Although a lane known as the Water Path leads to the well from the side of the Church House in Sampford Courtney, this site proved difficult to find because of a collapse in the cob wall of the churchyard and the general overgrown nature of the site. The well is set at the bottom of the bank which runs down from the churchyard into a patch of boggy scrub woodland and it consists of a spring running from underneath a few large granite stones which may once have formed a well house. The location of this well is interesting as the spring rises directly below the churchyard ; local opinion confirms that the site was once well maintained but has become neglected in the past 30 year to the extent that rubbish from the church is now tipped down the bank. The church and village are noteworthy not least as this was the site of the last battle in the Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549 which marked the defeat in battle of a Cornish led army and the final occasion when men from that country took up arms against an English monarch in defence of their ancient language and culture. Listed in the Devon Sites and Monuments Register.
