Perhaps the most unusual well in that you can sit on top of it and drink the water ready bottled and labelled. It is located in the floor of the conservatory of Brown's Hotel ,West Steet,Tavistock where it is covered by a solid glass floor which enables you to look down at the recently reconstructed well and the spring water running into it. This well was uncovered during major refurbishment in 2000 of this old coaching inn and restored as a feature but there is more to tell about its history to justify its inclusion in this survey. In 1597 a lease was granted for a garden and tenement in West Street "at the welle"; this tenement was owned by John ffytz , who is certainly from the same family as the man who built Fitz's well at Boughthayes(previous record ). Another link with the past is with an inscribed stone of the 6th century which was found in West Street near here; this is believed to be a memorial stone to an early Christian, Nepranus the son of Conberus, this stone is now to be found in the Vicarage garden. So this well as a modern water feature has real links with the past of Tavistock.
