St Decuman was one of the Celtic saints who came from Wales during the 7th century and in search of a remote place to worship God; he settled close to a pure spring of water which was already sacred to the people of the area. Legends tell that the holy man's head was cut off by "a certain man more venomous than an asp, more poisonous than the adder...." ( such beheading is a legend which is found associated with several Celtic Saints). Today the spring of pure water is still to be found close to the church dedicated to him and and which was originally built by the families of the two knights who murdered Thomas a Becket in 1170. Although some way from the main settlement at Watchet, the well is good example of how a local community can care for its sacred sites. The stone well house is in good repair and the stream of clear water flows down a paved channel and on into the land below. Recent works have been completed to enhance the whole site which now forms a quiet garden for contemplation and peace in this parish where the spirit of Celtic Christian teaching seems to be still very much alive..
